Average patient workload for the Level 3 emergency room is 12 patients per shift. The facility’s Emergency Room’s usual patient workload is medically ill patients with respiratory illness, congestive heart failure or other medical problems. The facility does not accept trauma patients and specialty assistance in general surgery, orthopedics and urology are available. The facility also has inpatient service which is covered by a hospitalist service. Erie VAMC’s Emergency Room is designated as a level 3 Emergency Room. During the night shifts, the contract emergency room physician (‘ER physician’) will be the sole emergency room physician responsible to cover all urgencies/emergencies occurring at night. Veteran patients will present with a variety of chronic and acute conditions. ER physician will admit patients to the medical center in strict accordance with hospital guidelines and criteria for admission, and will coordinate care with EVAMC hospitalist service. ER physician is required to respond to all calls from nurses in the emergency room for assessment of patients or orders, when needed.
The ER physician shall provide direct entry into each patient’s electronic medical record via Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) for all services performed.
