Job/Practice Description:
Emergency Department (hereinafter referred to as ED) serves an estimated 32,000 eligible veterans in the VAIHCS catchment area. It averages 6,100 visits per year, of which 2,800 are during off tours, weekends, and holidays. Most admitted patients are seen in the ED first. Case mix in the ED includes acute medical, neurological, psychiatric and surgical problems as well as exacerbation of chronic diseases. Many of the patients present with complex, multi-system, and medically distressed cases. Their conditions are, in many cases, directly related to the individual’s service to this country. Often the medical acuity is serious. Major trauma cases are not brought to this facility and there is no pediatric patient population. The population is 94 percent male, with an average age of 67. While female patient may present with gynecological complaints, no obstetrical care is provided. Facility provides ancillary and administrative support staff as well as Police/Security on site 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week. can consist of walk-in patients, patients brought in via ambulances, and patients brought from Community Living Center (CLS) and inpatient Mental Health wards. Physicians shall not work longer than 30 consecutive hours. Malpractice coverage shall be provided for as well as General Liability coverage.Triage and/or treat all patients presenting to the ED, including those with intoxication, other substance abuse, psychiatric problems or those veteran patients referred by the local hospitals.Attend to patients who are judged to be potential threats to themselves or others, or who are incapable of comprehending risks. These patients may require initiation of a 24-hour hold or appropriate, least restrictive restraints (documented with a specific length of duration) in accordance with facility policies to permit complete evaluation. EOD shall respond to codes in absence of hospitalist.
Work Schedule:
Monday – Friday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. the following day + various new provider orientation (approx 100 hrs). Saturday – Monday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. Holiday Coverage, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. the day following the holiday
Qualifications:
Board certification or Board Eligible in either Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Family Practice, Current licensure in state of practice, Clinical practice experience of at least two (2) years, ACLS and BLS
