Situation: Physician Services is a 40+ member physician group operated as part of the not-for-profit Health System, the largest medical provider serving a largely rural 300,000 population region composed of West Central Illinois, Northeast Missouri, and Southeast Iowa. The employed group is based on the Hospital Campus, but also operates rural clinics in various surrounding areas. One clinic was, established in 2003, is located in a beautiful million dollar clinic building constructed for that specific purpose. It is fully operational with an experienced and competent staff including a nurse practitioner. The only thing missing is a high-quality physician with a magnetic personality who can attract patients in the face of strong competition from another clinic sponsored by a competing hospital. The new physician can follow his/her patients in the hospital if desired, but management’s assumption is that this will be an out-patient only practice which utilizes the Hospitalist service. Coverage will be split with the mid-level practitioner, and vacation coverage will be provided by the group’s practitioners. Other group practice settings are also looking with the same package. Hospital is a 426-bed regional referral center which offers a full range of medical specialties and sub-specialties, diagnostic and treatment options, and support services.
