Description Nurse Practitioner (NP) needed to work in the Internal Medicine and Neurology Clinic at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, near Oceanside, CA. The NP will provide services supporting the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Program. The Program seeks to address gaps in the care available for the prevalent injuries among combatants from the global war on terrorism. Through adoption of risk-based staffing models and a uniform, best practice standard of care across the DoD Military Health System, the program seeks to ensure easy, rapid access to TBI care for all beneficiaries including Wounded Warriors, and to ensure that transition across networks of care recognizes the unique care coordination and case management requirements for TBI patients.

This Nurse Practitioner position is full-time, working 8 hours or 10-hour shifts Monday - Friday between the hours of 7:00am and 6:00pm.

DUTIES OF THE INTERNAL MEDICINE/NEUROLOGY CLINIC NURSE PRACTITIONER:
  • The NPs shall perform a full range of medical provider services, within the scope of privileges granted by the Commanding Officer.  Services shall be provided on site using government furnished supplies, facilities and equipment.  The NPs shall be familiar with the use of electronic medical record formats to document patient evaluations, treatment prescribed, and progress toward established treatment goals. 
  • The NPs shall provide diagnosis and treatment of patients with a full range of diseases that are within the scope of clinical practice for a Nurse Practitioner, including Traumatic Brain Injury, and applies knowledge of current research and clinical aspects of neurological medicine to manage patients with rare and difficult to identify signs and symptoms.  
  • The NPs shall work closely with the Program Manager of the Office of Neurologic Trauma regarding development and implementation of services, policies, treatment programs, and educational/outreach programs.   Services include advanced TBI-specific evaluation, treatment, and follow-up care for military personnel, their dependents, and veterans with brain injury.  The NPs shall perform appropriate functional neuroradiological imaging techniques and shall provide an explanation of studies about the extent, localization and severity of TBI damage.   The NPs shall also work closely with Wounded Warrior patients and other beneficiaries cared for in the Internal Medicine Clinic.
  • Apply epidemiologic techniques to track data specific to analysis of trends in TBI incidence, patient outcomes, mortality, and risk-factor analysis, as required.  The NPs shall be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products and shall possess keyboarding skills to perform TBI incidence trending, analysis of outcomes, and risk factor analysis. 
  • Ensure that all laboratory, radiological, clinical neurophysiological and special procedures results are communicated to the correct patient, and that all appropriate interventions are implemented.
  • Participate in conferences, interdisciplinary teams meetings and communication with referring providers and commands.  The NPs shall support TBI clinical practice guidelines which have immediate and long range impact through active planning implementation of care and evaluation, patient teaching, patient participation in their care, family counseling and involvement with interdisciplinary colleagues. 
  • Provide input to medical board determinations and administrative separations as requested.
  • Conduct clinical staff education when requested to enhance knowledge, understanding, and awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder, and treatment options for the management of post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and other combat related disorders.
