Description Serves as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at the Medical Center. The Medical Center is a 99-bed general medical surgical hospital that serves as a referral hospital for Native Americans in the four-state area of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah. The clinical case load involves the full range of orthopedic cases including the very difficult. When performing major orthopedic operations, is in complete charge of surgery, guiding, directing, and assisting the medical officers, nurse anesthetist and nurses. Works with considerable independence during course of patient care. Work involves out of the ordinary diagnostic decisions or treatments are discussed with appropriate consultant. Works closely with allied health professionals, i.e., community health nurses, social workers, health education, etc., in the provision of broad health program services. Maintains departmental quality assurance program. Responsible for the application and implementation of EEO program guidelines and the achievement of tangible EEO progress and results relative to minorities and women in selection, details, reassignments, training, awards, career ladder, hiring. Approves, rejects or modifies recommendations for promotions, reassignments, status changes, performance awards and disciplinary actions for assigned employees. Approves, modifies or rejects leave requests, work schedules, determines level of performance expected and appraises employees performance against expectations. Resolves informal complaints of staff. Works on a regular assigned, rotation or callback basis to provide continuity of medical services during evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications: POSITIVE EDUCATION REQUIRED: YES LICENSURE REQUIRED: YES BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Education: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation. Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training. Graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Licensure: Candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. IN ADDITION TO BASIC REQUIREMENTS: 5 years of residency training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training, 1 year of appropriate experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level.
