Provides direct psychiatric care (e.g., administers comprehensive psychiatric &/or neurological examinations, diagnoses & treats patients or conducts most difficult lab tests; may include care for offenders in crisis); refers offenders for psychiatric hospitalization as needed. Writes mental health evaluations & reports for offenders in need of and/or receiving psychiatric level of care. (i.e. offenders with need for psychiatric medication);prescribes medication as needed ; interprets & analyzes laboratory reports & findings; writes summary & maintains written account of patient progress; Acts as the lead of treatment team meetings and is instrumental in the development of treatment plans for offenders on the mental health caseload. Directs delivery of psychiatric/mental health care services to inmates incarcerated in correctional institutions. Provides clinical supervision for subordinate staff (Physician Assistants or Clinical Nurse Specialists).
Provides for medical consultation to all programs in mental health. Participates as member of administrative staff in development of overall goals, objectives, standards, policies & guidelines for assigned mental health programs. Participates in QI activities and SPART activities; directs preparation of technical information materials & continuing education seminars; maintains clinical competency.
